Aurora Residential Subdivision, Hamilton

The Project

Aurora subdivision is a landmark 36-hectare residential development located 6 km south of Hamilton City Centre. This multi-stage greenfield project encompasses six stages, offering over 450 mixed-density residential lots. Stages 1 and 2 are complete, and stage 3 is currently under construction.

Situated in the emerging Peacocke area in southern Hamilton, this development benefits from enhanced roading infrastructure connecting the suburb to central Hamilton, unlocking its full potential for growth and community development.

Our Role

Since 2017, HD Geo has been a trusted partner to Jones Group, providing geotechnical expertise and fostering a strong collaborative relationship throughout the project. Our involvement spans from the initial due diligence phase to ongoing support during design and construction. Key contributions include:

  • Due diligence testing and reporting to inform early project decisions.

  • Testing, assessment, and reporting to support resource consent applications.

    • geotech soil testing included hand auger drilling, machine auger drillholes, soakage testing, investigation pits, and cpts

    • geotechnical assessments included slope stability, bearing capacity, static settlement, liquefaction, lateral spread, expansive soils, and pond liner assessments

  • Detailed design of retaining walls and road pavements.

    • retaining wall types included timber pole, keystone, and crib walls

  • Earthworks specification to ensure robust construction practices.

  • Construction observation and testing to maintain high standards during earthworks and infrastructure development.

    • Our testing included NDM testing for bulk earthworks and clay fill, and pavement testing

To date, the project has achieved remarkable milestones, including over 300,000 m³ of bulk earthworks, multiple retaining walls up to 5.5 m high (constructed using various systems such as timber crib, timber pole, keystone block, and green terramesh MSE), complex concrete intersections, and the development of two wetlands.

The Results

This project exemplifies the power of collaboration. By working closely with Jones Group, professional partners, and other stakeholders, we have helped shape a vibrant new community. Aurora offers families a lifestyle enriched with cycleways, walkways, pedestrian bridges, green spaces, reserves, a proposed playground, and a neighbourhood centre filled with shops and cafés. Together, we are creating a place where families of all sizes can thrive and enjoy the best of everyday living.
