Kennedy Bay Anchored Redi Rock Wall

Client: Thames Coromandel District Council
Project Duration: 2022 to 2024
Location: Coromandel, Waikato

At HD Geo Ltd, we pride ourselves on delivering smart and effective engineering solutions. One of our standout projects is the Kennedy Bay Anchored Retaining Wall, a critical infrastructure project designed to stabilise a section of Kennedy Bay Road in the Thames Coromandel District.

The Project

The Kennedy Bay Anchored Concrete Block Retaining Wall project was initiated to address ongoing instability and erosion issues along Kennedy Bay Road. The site had experienced significant surface water erosion, reducing the road width to less than 4 meters in places and posing a high risk of further reduction. A key challenge from the client was to limit road closures to a maximum of 30 minutes at a time throughout construction, minimizing disruptions to the community, as the only alternative route would add over an hour to travel times.

Our Role

Our team conducted a comprehensive site investigation, including rotary core bore holes and shallow ground testing, to develop a detailed ground model. This model informed our decision to install an anchor-supported mass block wall using the Redi-Rock® mass block product. The wall, approximately 40 meters in length, is supported by grouted anchors and steel distribution plates to enhance its bearing capacity and resilience.

The construction of the retaining wall involved several innovative techniques to overcome the challenges posed by the steep slopes and limited site access. We utilised soil nails and concrete blocks to ensure a strong and durable structure. The anchors, designed as 32 mm Williams grouted bars, were connected to the back of the blocks via a concrete bond beam cast on site.

The Results

The successful completion of the Kennedy Bay Anchored Retaining Wall has significantly improved the stability and safety of Kennedy Bay Road. This project not only showcases our technical expertise but also our commitment to delivering cost-effective and low-risk solutions for our clients.
