Mt Taranaki Scaling Works
Client: Department of Conservation
Project Duration: 2019 to 2024
Location: Taranaki
The Project
The Mt Taranaki Scaling works began in response to a significant rockfall event on February 20, 2018, which impacted the Holly Hut track. Our initial task was to assess the condition of the rock face and provide recommendations for managing the site. This involved a combination of visual inspections, drone surveys, and rope access scaling to remove at-risk blocks and boulders.
Over the past six years, our team at HD Geo Ltd has been dedicated to ensuring the safety and preservation of this section of track on the side of iconic Mt Taranaki. This project, commissioned by the Department of Conservation (DOC), has involved multiple phases of assessment, scaling, and ongoing management to mitigate rockfall risks and maintain the integrity of popular hiking tracks.
Key Milestones
2018: Initial assessment and emergency response to the rockfall event. The Holly Hut track was closed for safety reasons until late 2019.
2020: A comprehensive visual inspection and drone survey were conducted to evaluate the rock face's condition. No physical scaling was performed during this visit.
2021: Rope access rock scaling was carried out to remove identified at-risk blocks on the scarp face.
2024: The latest assessment and scaling operations were completed, with updated recommendations provided for ongoing site management.
The Results
Our work on Mt Taranaki has significantly reduced the risk of rockfalls, ensuring the safety of hikers and preserving the natural beauty of the area. The project has also provided valuable insights into the geological stability of the region, contributing to broader conservation efforts.
